Beginner’s Guide – Domain Name Picking

If you remember the “.COM” boom of the late 1990’s, then you will remember stories of people making small fortunes by registering the .com domain names of companies and well-known organisations in order to sell their domain extensions at truly inflated prices. Some people registered a domain for about $10 and sold them to the respective companies for thousands and sometimes millions, creating instant online millionaires.

Over ten years later and the.com bubble has long burst. Most domain combinations have been registered and people are looking for good domain name alternatives or with different domain extensions. Enter the “.WS” (meaning “.website”). The.ws extension has already taken large inroads to becoming the next.com and companies such as eBay, Bose, BMW and Kodak already have theirs. Due to it being relatively “new”, many people are finding unregistered and top quality domains using.ws.

As you may already know, the Internet, far from being a single humongous entity, is actually an immense and intricate web of computer systems that are linked together spanning the globe. The most visible sign of this huge network is the single computer unit in your office or workspace, which is only one among millions and millions of computers similarly linked to the Internet. As you can imagine, it can be quite a formidable task to get all of these computers communicating with each other and this is where the Domain Name System or DNS comes in.

Today, globally there are over 1 billion people with Internet access. This is said to be expanding at the rate of tens of thousands daily. With that growth comes increased personal and business websites and therefore a lack of remaining.com,.us,.ca,.co.uk etc extension combinations.

HOW: Log in to your hosting account c panel Look for the section called Domains Under here click on ‘redirects’ Fill in the following fields; Type:permanent; All public domains; Redirect to: enter the website URL that you want clicks to go to (include the http://www ) Check the wild card redirect box As easy as that you have sent the traffic from one domain name to another site. Note: If this isn’t how your hosting company handles redirects, they should be able to tell you the steps to do this, or even do it for you.

So if you missed the boat with the “.com” boom, make sure you don’t do the same with .ws.
